Cunning Frenchman Fabrice Santoro outlasted countryman Arnaud Clement in a history-making five-set battle to advance to the second round of Roland Garros on Tuesday. Resuming their match that was suspended late Monday at 5-5 in the fifth set, Santoro eventually triumphed 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(5), 3-6, 16-14. The match lasted 6 hours, 33 minutes - the longest in tennis history.
Top seed Roger Federer breezed into the second round with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 victory over lucky loser Kristof Vliegen. Federer is attempting to win his third different Grand Slam title.
