H-index 是物理学家Jorge Hirsch在2005年提出来的，文章发表在PNAS上，Vol102,16569-16572。Hi-index的定义是如果一个科学家在他发表的N篇文章中有h篇文章的引用次数都超过或等于h，而其他的N-h篇文章的引用次数都少于h。该H值代表一个学者的学术水平，h值越大，水平越高。在化学领域，哈佛大学的Whitesides H值为135，就是说他有至少135篇文章引用次数超过135次，当然学者的年龄越大，H值应该越大，因为他发表的文章越久，别人引用的次数越多。Hirsch教授提出在主要的研究型大学里面，H值为12能提副教授，H为18能提教授。文章还说进入美国物理学会的fellowship 的H值为15到20，而美国科学院的院士的H值在45以上，当然也有比这少很多的，大家可以看下面排名的最后，有一个生物化学家拿了诺贝尔奖，H值才13，也就是说他只有多余13篇文章引用次数超过或等于13次。
   仔细看看了，好像是一个中国人都没有呀！看看咱们国内的学者，看看他们的H值，真是汗颜呀！好多教授（乃至杰出青年，长江学者）都达不到12，也就是美国副教授的水平，当然这也和化学的不同专业有关。建议以后想做科研的同学出国的话就在下面找个大牛混，当然下面的很多学者都是年纪一大把了，很多也都退休了。
